I am testing the demo app on my iPhone and I noticed that when you click on link it opens the Safari browser. Is this by design?

No, in fact that is currently the #1 priority in terms of the stream overhaul. We're actively looking for a solution and will immediately release a fix once this is done.
This would be fixed in v4 if not before.
